This
is the 1990 release featuring an artist close to our hearts, from the days
before W.R. Records was a record company. In 1982, in the Hill Country of
Texas, Bert Winston stumbled upon Roland Davis, who was raising goats in
Ingram. Somehow a guitar appeared and before you know it Roland started playing
and singing songs that hadn't been heard in over fifty years. Roland Davis
was a player of the first class. He knew chords that belonged in the musical
Smithsonian and sang with the voice of a man who's been there and done that.
Bert produced his first recording since the 1940's, the now out-of-print "Lost
But Not Forgotten." Now seven years later Roland is back with the big
band doing songs some of you haven't heard in decades, if ever. If you want
authentic Texas Swing music, this is it.
Roland had a band and toured the Texas Hill Country in the 1930's and 40's. His
influences include the Sons of the Pioneers, Bob Wills, and early traditional
country artists Jimmie Rodgers and Vernon Dalhart.
Produced by Craig Chambers, this recording features some of the best
session musicians in the business! Buddy Spicher on fiddle, Pig Robbins,
piano, Tom Morrell, steel guitar, Tommy Allsup, electric guitar, Kenny
Buttrey (recorded with Elvis & Ronstadt among others), drums, Craig
Chambers, rhythm guitar, and Ben Brogdon, upright bass.
Recorded shortly after his 70th birthday, the warmth and sincerety and the
sheer experience reflected in Roland's vocal performance make this album
a real treasure!
Sorry, available on cassette only.
